Mas is abbreviation for mask, masker, masking, masquerader or carnival costume, and to "play mas" is a colloquial expression to wear a carnival costume at Carnival time, to join in the masquerade, or to join a carnival band.
Trinidad carnival is all about participation and the individual’s experience. Unlike other carnivals you aren’t just a spectator; nope you are a participator in the main parade. And if you choose to be a spectator, you can get right in amongst the revelers to take your pictures.
There are no barriers between you and the fun. It’s about interacting with real people while having the time of your life.

Tips for New Mas Players

Wear Comfortable Shoes -
You will be on your feet for a minimum of five hours. Playing Mas is fun, but it can wreak havoc on your feet. Think comfort when picking your shoes and it would not be a good time to break in a new shoe.
That comfortable, reliable pair of sneakers my just be your best and most comfortable bet.
Conserve Your Energy-
In the same vain, conserve your energy. Most of you will be on the road from 2am Jouvert. Don't play big and overexert yourself before you hit the Savannah.
Chill and enjoy the vibe, and try not to tire yourself out too early. Remember you will be on the road for nearly 10 hours Tuesday, 8 hours Monday and 5 -6 hours Jouvert.

You can’t be camera shy -
Tere is no avoiding the cameras. There will be flashes going off everywhere. Just be mindful of what you are doing.

Carnival is about fun – so have fun. Enjoy yourself to the fullest.
Forget all your inhibitions and stress. The best thing about Trinidadians is that they are fun. Don't think playing mas by yourself you're alone. You're guaranteed to make at least one new friend.
